The heart of southern Öland
Mörbylånga is the main town of the eponymous municipality in southern Öland. The small harbour town on the west coast is noticeably quieter than Borgholm and makes a good base for exploring the wide-open landscape of southern Öland.
On the edge of the World Heritage Site
Just to the east begins the Stora Alvaret, the UNESCO-protected limestone plain (alvar). Southern Öland's cultural landscape, with its old villages, stone walls and burial grounds such as Gettlinge, is part of the "Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland" World Heritage Site.
Practicalities
Mörbylånga has shops, cafés and a pleasant harbour. From here it's just a few kilometres to the Alvar and on further south towards Eketorp and Ottenby.

The treeless limestone steppe in southern Öland, around 260 km² and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over 35 orchid species, rare endemics and one of the island's best birding areas.
Gettlinge Burial Ground
One of Öland's largest burial grounds, over 300 graves, a 30-metre stone ship setting and a post mill on the escarpment above the Kalmar Sound.
