Flying to Öland

Öland has no airport of its own, the nearest is on the mainland at Kalmar Öland Airport (KLR), just a few minutes' drive from the Öland Bridge. Travellers flying in land in Kalmar and cross the bridge onto the island from there. This guide covers the scheduled service, flight time and fares, the route from the terminal to the island, and an honest comparison against driving in with your own car.

The Stockholm-Kalmar flight

The only regular scheduled service to Kalmar Öland Airport runs via Stockholm/Arlanda (ARN). It's operated year-round by SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), not just in summer, but several times a day on weekdays throughout the year. That adds up to around nine flights a week to Kalmar, Monday to Friday plus Sundays.

The roughly 343-kilometre route is flown with ATR 72 or ATR 42 turboprop aircraft. Flight time is around one hour, usually between 55 and 65 minutes. Travellers coming from outside Sweden typically fly into Stockholm or Copenhagen first, then either connect onto the domestic flight at Arlanda or continue by car from Copenhagen (more on that below).

Fares and booking

The domestic leg is reasonably priced. As a guide, one-way fares start from around US$78, with a return in the region of US$176, roughly €160 to €180 for the round trip. Firm euro figures can't be pinned down, since price depends heavily on booking time and season.

There's a clear seasonal pattern - high summer, especially August, tends to be the most expensive, while July can be somewhat cheaper. Flexible travellers should book early and compare individual summer weeks. Since only one airline serves the route, there's no real alternative carrier to shop against, timing is the only lever.

From the airport over the bridge to the island

Kalmar's big advantage is the short hop to the mainland and on to the island. The airport is only about 5 kilometres from Kalmar city centre and around 17 kilometres from the Öland end of the bridge at Färjestaden. The approach to the Öland Bridge is a few minutes' drive from the terminal, and the crossing itself takes a realistic 15 to 20 minutes.

The crossing is made via the Öland Bridge (Ölandsbron), at 6,072 metres, one of the longest bridges in Europe, opened in 1972, toll-free and open year-round. Car hire at Kalmar Airport

Because Öland's sights are spread out and the island's bus network is thin, a hire car is the practical choice for flexible exploring. The major agencies Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt all have desks right at the airport.

Prices are only a rough guide, economy cars from around US$47 a day, averaging around US$90 a day for a mid-size car, with seasonal swings either way. May tends to be cheapest, summer more expensive. No firm 2026 summer prices can be fixed from this; anyone travelling in high summer should book the car early. The big agencies' presence at the airport is confirmed, but guaranteed desk hours outside the season shouldn't be assumed without checking.

Without a car, public transport from the airport

Getting around without a hire car is possible too. Bus route 402, run by Kalmar Länstrafik (KLT), links the airport with Kalmar Central Station (Kalmar C) in around 20 minutes. Onward regional buses run from Kalmar across the bridge to the island.

Honestly, though, public transport on Öland itself is thin, routes are concentrated on a few main corridors, and remote beaches, windmills or the Stora Alvaret are hard to reach spontaneously without a car. Flying or driving from continental Europe?

For travellers from outside Sweden, the domestic flight from Stockholm is rarely the natural starting point, the real choice is usually driving or flying via Copenhagen. Via Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH), the most convenient gateway to the region, it's about 310 kilometres and 3.5 to 4 hours of driving to reach Kalmar via the Öresund Bridge (around 16 kilometres), plus the short crossing over to Öland. There's no direct ferry from Copenhagen or the southern Swedish coast to Öland.

Drivers bringing their own car cross year-round on the Rostock-Trelleborg car ferry (Stena Line and TT-Line), with several departures a day; the crossing takes around six hours, or as little as five hours on TT-Line's fastest sailing. From Trelleborg it's a road journey on to Kalmar.

A reliable total-cost comparison in euros isn't really possible, it depends too much on group size, booking time, length of stay and fuel costs. As a rough rule of thumb, flying plus a hire car tends to suit one or two travellers on a short trip, while driving plus ferry works better for families with a lot of luggage who want their own car on the ground anyway.
