Events & Festivals on Öland - Skördefest, Midsummer & Victoria Day

Öland comes alive with festivals through the summer half of the year. The calendar runs from Midsummer dancing at the island's heritage farms, through the royal celebration at Solliden and the concert season at the castle ruin, to the big harvest festival in September that takes over the whole island. Timing a visit around one of these dates shows a side of Öland that the quiet high-summer routine doesn't reveal.

Skördefest - Öland's great harvest festival

The Skördefest is the high point of the island's year and Öland's biggest autumn event. In 2026 it runs from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September, with the official opening already on Wednesday 23 September. The date traditionally falls in the last week of September, week 39 on the calendar.

The festival was founded in 1996. It spans the entire island, from the southern tip to the northern, with over 900 individual activities. Farms, producers and artists open their doors, with regional food, crafts, farm tours and Öland's distinctive scarecrow art. There is no single admission fee, many offerings are free and open without booking, while individual ones may carry a small charge that varies from farm to farm.

For scale, the most recent documented visitor figure comes from a 2018 report and puts attendance at around 220,000 visitors over the extended weekend. The Friday evening Konstnatt (art night) alone drew an estimated 70,000 people. Exact current numbers vary year to year, but the scale makes one thing clear, anyone travelling in this particular week should book accommodation and plan routes early, as the island gets noticeably busy.

Midsummer at the heritage farms

Midsummer is Sweden's most important summer festival, and Öland celebrates it in a decentralised way, across the island rather than at one site. Midsummer's Eve (Midsommarafton) falls on Friday 19 June in 2026. Celebrations take place at more than 20 locations across the island, mostly organised by local heritage associations (hembygdsföreningar), with dancing round the maypole, music and traditional food.

The venues are typically Ölandic, heritage farms, churches and historic sites. Well-known locations include:

• Böda, by Böda church in the north

Victoriadagarna - Sweden's royal day at Solliden

On 14 July, the birthday of Crown Princess Victoria, Öland marks its royal day. Solliden Palace near Borgholm is the Swedish royal family's summer residence, and Victoriadagarna draws a large crowd to the island every year.

The public highlight is the communal singing outside the palace. Between 15:45 and 16:00, the crowd joins the Crown Princess and her family in singing "Ja må hon leva" ("Long may she live"), a public gathering, free and open to all. Victoria then travels by horse and carriage along Prinsessan Estelles promenad into Borgholm. The official Victoria Concert takes place that evening at Borgholm Castle ruin, is broadcast on SVT1 and SVT Play, and requires a ticket (booking via victoriadagarna.se).

One practical note, the Victoriapromenaden, a guided walk that is part of the celebrations, costs SEK 50 per person. Whether the palace grounds themselves are open to the public on 14 July, or only the singing outside the gate, isn't clearly stated officially, anyone who wants certainty should check the organiser's website shortly before the date.

Concert summer at Borgholm Castle ruin

Borgholm Castle ruin is the island's biggest concert stage through July and August. Shows are staged on the Slottsruinens scen, within the ruin's walls, with a programme dominated by Swedish pop and rock. Acts announced for 2026 include:

• Thomas Stenström - 28 July

On top of that, 14 July brings the annual Victoria Concert as part of the royal celebrations. Tickets are sold via platforms such as nortic.se and livenation.se; specific prices and capacities vary by concert and should be checked directly. Markets across the island

From April to October, markets run continuously across Öland, from genuine crafts to flea-market stalls and local food specialities, mostly family-friendly and low-cost to attend. Two classic summer markets with a fixed date are:

• Färjestadens Marknad - 6-7 July 2026, in the harbour at Färjestaden, a classic family market with fairground rides and attractions
• Mörbylånga sommarmarknad - 16 July 2026 in Mörbylånga

Most other market dates change from year to year and are announced locally. It's worth checking the island calendar before travelling, to catch any impromptu farm markets and events near your accommodation.
